Creating a Coding Lesson
Coding can be fun!
In my first year of university, I thought it would be interesting to take a coding class. I ended up dropping out immediately because the content was way over my head. However, exploring the Scratch program proved to be extremely easy and... fun! I decided to create a lesson that introduced students to coding by having the students act as their own "sprite". In saying this, I mean that I gave the students instructions and had them follow each instruction by moving a marker (ie. block, eraser, etc.) around their paper. This could also be done physically, I suppose. If I were to say, "Move 3 steps forward, wait two seconds and say 'Hello!'," the students could be expected to follow those instructions. Then they would be acting as my sprites! I think that this approach makes coding a little less daunting.
See my lesson plan here for a better idea of how I thought of introducing coding to a grade 3/4 class!
Well done again Sydney! For someone that has no experience coding, I think this will make a fantastic lesson plan. The students are going to love it!
