Education Apps: Grade 3 Mathematics Lesson

Learning new math skills can seem daunting to some students. However, using technology to provide an educational, yet engaging platform can prove to be a huge win when it comes to teaching! During a mini- introduction to addition with fractions, we used the online resource called Starfall to offer students an exciting yet gentle initiation to the concept. This app offers a variety of online math exercises that are geared towards students in grades K-3. One of the best things about this app is that the students have the chance to practice their math skills without the pressure of making a mistake.

Two Stars & a Wish

Students are able to try as many times as they need to get the right answer. Additionally, this online platform provides visuals for students, so even if the students use mental math, there is still a visual component to the exercise that reinforces their number skills. Moreover, at the end of the game, the relationship between the fractions and other equivalent fractions are introduced, which scaffolds for future learning. The one thing that I wish this app would do is narrate the movement on the number line.

Reflection

The lesson my partner and I delivered to our student when as expected. The student was engaged, excited, and receptive to the learning task. There is potential for the music and imagery to take away from the learning. However, this app is meant to supplement teaching and not replace it. I will definitely be using Starfall in future practice for my students; I cannot wait to check out the other activities that they have!

Please take a look at our "Mini- Fractions with Starfall Lesson Plan" to see how exactly we implemented this tech resource to support student learning in the classroom!

Cheers,

Miss Walraven
